Safe Faucet
In an article about global water crisis, Kathryn Reid
writes: “There’s nothing more essential to life on earth
than water. Yet, from Cape Town to Flint, Michigan, and
from rural, sub-Saharan Africa to Asia’s teeming
megacities, there’s a global water crisis. People are
struggling to access the quantity and quality of water
they need for drinking, cooking, bathing,
hand-washing, and growing their food.”
One in four people do not have access to safe drinking
water. In other words, 6% of the world does not have
access to an improved water source.
Our concept focuses on water as a necessity to all and
a luxury to some. Our approach to the faucet design is
one of a reminder of the importance of water and of
not taking it for granted.
The design is a reminder that water is a treasure thus is
kept in a “safe”. The faucet imitates the action of a safe
handle which when rotated pops open the door and
gives the user access to his/her precious belongings
which in our case is the water.
Emerging out of the idea of
the conservation of water, our
target audience is naturally
people with abundant access
to water. In addition, the most
water waste occurs in the
bathroom, mainly in showers.
Thus the faucet is designed to
go in the bathroom, whether
in showers or for washbasins.
The faucet is also designed to
be sold to luxurious hotels
and retreats moving towards
sustainability to help reduce
water waste in their facilities.
